Today in 1909 marks a landmark of sorts in Pentecostal history. Under the leadership of evangelist William J. Seymour, the first "group outbreak" of tongues occurred in Los Angeles. The event marked the start of what became a three-year-long occurence known as the "Azusa Street Revival."
The practice of "corporate tongues" is still taught by many pentecostals, and is still a bone of contention among many conservative churches and leaders. The issue is not whether or not the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues is still available to the church today - many will allow for the possibilities; the issue is that how it is practiced, taught, and called-for by many cannot be supported by the sciptures.
